It has been reported that controversial internet personality Andrew Tate has been arrested in Romania in connection with a probe into human trafficking and rape. Tate’s home in Bucharest, the capital, was searched, and he and his brother Tristan were taken into custody.

Police have informed the BBC that the suspects have been taken into custody. The former kickboxer shot to stardom in 2016 after a video purporting to show him abusing a female housemate on the British reality show Big Brother.

After gaining internet fame for his comments that sexual assault victims’ partners should “carry responsibility,” Twitter eventually banned him. As of right now, he is back in his old position. He became widely known, especially among young guys, by advocating an extreme version of masculinity and luxury despite being banned from many social media platforms.

He frequently showed up in movies driving a fleet of luxury sports vehicles, flying in private aircraft, and taking lavish vacations. A spokesperson for the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) told the BBC that prosecutors had requested to keep the influential person in a “detention center” for another 30 days.

On Friday, a court will issue a decision regarding the application, the spokeswoman said. The brothers and two Romanian nationals have been under scrutiny since April. According to the lawyer representing the two brothers, they remained silent during the detention hearing.

According to DIICOT, the four suspects “appear to have constructed an organized crime gang to recruit, housing, and exploit women by forcing them to make pornographic content intended to be seen on specialized websites for a fee.”

Tate and his brother were seen being escorted out of a mansion in a viral video shared on social media. As reported by the Daily Mirror, a Tate representative said he could not comment on the arrest.

He continued, “However, Andrew and Tristan Tate have the utmost respect for the Romanian authorities and will always support and help in any way they can.” A subsequent tweet from Andrew Tate’s account referred to The Matrix, a film he frequently makes allusions to.

Agents from “The Matrix” were sent, the message said. Matrix-related tweets from Twitter CEO Elon Musk were also retweeted from this account. The Romanian Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism stated Thursday night, without naming the Tate brothers specifically, that two British nationals and two Romanian nationals were under investigation for their possible involvement in a human trafficking ring.

According to the statement, authorities have located six victims of “sexual exploitation” at the hands of an “organized criminal organization.” Police said the British nationals used “the loverboy method” to “recruit” the victims by pretending they were interested in starting a relationship when they weren’t.

Later, they were threatened with physical harm if they didn’t perform in scenes with pornographic content, according to the statement. A video of the raid, released by police, shows weapons, knives, and cash lying in one area.

Five years ago, Tate uprooted his life and moved to Romania. Authorities may have been alerted to Tate’s presence in the country because he posted a video criticizing environmental campaigner Greta Thunberg, which led to widespread speculation online.

Some viewers speculated that his location was accidentally revealed when he was shown being handed a pizza box from a nearby restaurant in the video he uploaded. The pizza box, however, is not considered to be significant.

Tate, age 36, sparked the argument with the activist, age 19 when he boasted on social media about the “enormous emissions” caused by his collection of automobiles earlier this week.

She tweeted, alluding to the internet rumor, “this is what happens when you don’t recycle your pizza boxes,” shortly after her arrest. British citizen Tate, born in the United States, competed professionally as a kickboxer and won world titles before becoming a household name around the world.

The 2016 season of Big Brother ended quickly for him as a video surfaced showing him striking a woman with a belt. Tate claimed the footage had been manipulated, calling it “a pure fake attempting to make myself seem terrible” at the time of his expulsion.

As “misogyny is a vile philosophy that is not accepted,” Mr. Tate has been removed from social media sites like YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. Twitter had previously banned him, but after Elon Musk’s takeover, he was reinstated.
