CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, On Wednesday, the Biden administration pledged an extra $1.1 billion in security aid for Ukraine, increasing the total U.S. commitment since Russia’s incursion in late February to more than $16.2 billion.
Following referendums supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin in four Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine, the impending aid package was announced. Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson will vote on whether or not to join Russia in polls widely condemned as fraudulent. Putin has been accused of using them to set the stage for the annexation of further Ukrainian territory by Moscow by the end of the week.

The White House declared earlier this week that the United States would never recognise the results of the “fake referendum” and would keep assisting Kyiv with military and humanitarian supplies.
Eighteen High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and their accompanying ammunition, one hundred fifty armoured multipurpose vehicles, one hundred fifty tactical vehicles to tow weapons, forty trucks and eighty trailers to transport heavy equipment, two radars for unmanned aerial systems, twenty multi-mission radars, secure communication systems, and body armour make up the latest U.S. security package.
The newest security support package is approved through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, or USAI, which uses cash appropriated by Congress rather than a presidential drawdown authority, which removes weaponry directly from U.S. depots.
The USAI helps fund the defence industry to increase the quantity and quality of weapons produced in the United States.
Reporters at the Pentagon heard undersecretary of defence for policy Colin Kahl say last month that the delivery of USAI packages can take anywhere from months to years, depending on the government contracting process.
Furthermore, NATO members have helped increase regional security by sheltering refugees and providing training to Ukrainian security personnel.
