Necessary Car Precations: What to do if Your Car is Flooded

Look inside

If you are interested in buying this vehicle, take a look. Here are a few ways to spot flood damage.

  1. Check the carpet, floor mats, behind the dashboard and under the headrest for mold, sand, dirt and water damage. Mold can also produce a strong odor. 2. Check the interior trim and door panels for wear.
  2. Check for dirt or grime behind the wiring harness, in the transmission area, around the small vents of the starter, the power steering pump and the spare tire compartment.
  3. Look at a carpet that has just been cleaned.
  4. Check for loose wiring under the dashboard and door speakers, which are often damaged by flooding.
  5. Check the dashboard, interior lights and exterior lights for water drops and fog. 7. Pull the seat belt and check for dirt, mold or moisture.
  6. Check the screws on the dashboard and other areas not exposed to water for corrosion.
  7. Check for rust around the doors, on the running boards, under the dash, in the hood, and in the trunk lid.
  8. Check the underside of the hood for signs of corrosion by checking the back of the rubber boots around the electrical and engine connections. Aluminum and its alloys produce white powder and flakes, copper produces a green patina, and ferrous metals (iron) show signs of corrosion.
