On August 17, 1958, American singer Belinda Jo Carlisle was born. She first rose to prominence as the band’s lead singer for the Go-Go’s, the most popular all-female rock band in history, and then went on to enjoy a fruitful solo career.

Carlisle, a native of Southern California, joined the Go-in Go’s 1978 when the band was just getting started. The band’s first studio album, 1981’s Beauty and the Beat, was a huge success and a cornerstone of the new wave movement in the United States.
