On August 17, 1958, American singer Belinda Jo Carlisle was born. She first rose to prominence as the band’s lead singer for the Go-Go’s, the most popular all-female rock band in history, and then went on to enjoy a fruitful solo career.

Carlisle, a native of Southern California, joined the Go-in Go’s 1978 when the band was just getting started. The band’s first studio album, 1981’s Beauty and the Beat, was a huge success and a cornerstone of the new wave movement in the United States. The Go-were Go’s the first all-female band to have a number-one record, and they remain the only one to do so to this day. More than seven million copies of Go-Go albums have been sold worldwide.

Carlisle had a successful solo career after the Go-Gos disbanded in 1985, with songs including “Mad About You,” “I Get Weak,” “Circle in the Sand,” “Leave a Light On,” and “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” reaching number one on the radio. Carlisle has continued her solo career while frequently performing with the reunited Go-since Go’s the band’s reformation in 1999.
