What Happened To Garoppolo: American football quarterback James Richard Garoppolo (born November 2, 1991), also known by his moniker “Jimmy G,” plays for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL).
In his final year of collegiate football, he led the nation in throwing yards and passing touchdowns and was awarded the Walter Payton Award. In 2014, the New England Patriots picked Garoppolo in the second round of the NFL draught, and he served as Tom Brady’s backup for the first four seasons.
After being traded to the 49ers late in the 2017 season, Garoppolo led them to five straight victories and a turnaround from their 1-10 record. He led the 49ers to the best record in the NFC in 2019 and a trip to Super Bowl LIV.
A year later, in 2021, he guided the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game. Injuries have also marred his time in San Francisco; he will miss most of the 2018 and 2020 seasons due to his absences. While Trey Lance was the team’s starting quarterback entering the 2022 season, he served as the backup until Lance was injured in week 2. Here’s a look at What Happened To Garoppolo?
What Happened To Garoppolo?
One of the NFL’s best teams, the San Francisco 49ers, took a significant hit on Sunday when quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was lost for the season with a left foot injury. It was revealed that Garoppolo had been injured on the opening drive of the 49ers’ 33-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins and will miss the rest of the season due to surgery.

It’s a real downer. “We know what Jimmy’s been through, how hard he’s worked at this,” coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game. Just as a team, and with everything that happened in the course of the game, and to be able to overcome some things, that was a fantastic game.
That’s why this victory means so much more. However, it’s been difficult to process the news concerning Jimmy. After losing starter Trey Lance to an ankle injury in Week 2, the first-place 49ers (8-4) have won five straight games to establish themselves as one of the top contenders in the NFC but must now go the rest of the way with untested rookie Brock Purdy.
Since joining the 49ers in the middle of the 2017 season, Garoppolo has had three seasons interrupted by injuries. The knee injury he suffered in Week 3 of the 2018 season ended his season, and the ankle issues he suffered in 2020 caused him to miss eight games.
While Garoppolo was on the field for the Niners, they reached the Super Bowl in 2019 and the NFC Championship Game in 2021. Although he had a checkered past, Lance was drafted third overall by the 49ers in 2021 after the team traded three first-round picks to move up and choose him.
Despite keeping his job the year before, Garoppolo could not be sold before shoulder surgery in the offseason destroyed his potential for new opportunities. After Lance got hurt, he returned to San Francisco on a reduced deal to serve as the starter again. He was having one of the finest games of his professional career.
“It’s horrible,” said running back Christian McCaffrey. Even though I haven’t been here very long, I have nothing but praise for him. I know what it’s like to be in the middle of a season when everything suddenly stops because of the calendar. It’s painful.

Purdy, who entered the league as Mr. Irrelevant after being selected with the last draught pick, suddenly holds the most crucial position on one of the league’s top teams, and the Niners will try to go the rest of the way with him.
The quarterback’s coach Brian Griese told the former Iowa State standout, who had thrown just nine passes in mop-up duty in a Week 7 defeat to Kansas City, that it would be his time in the spotlight on Sunday. Here’s a look at What Happened To Garoppolo?
A “butterfly vibe” of “Man, we’re going in, let’s do this” was present, as the author puts it. Said Purdy. “It’s not like I was standing there going, ‘Oh, shoot, what do I do?'” Can you give me a readout? Not even close. I always take the first pitch. As if I were the opener, I get ready for everything.
Somebody just called my name. We are prepared to go, as instructed by Coach Griese. After completing a successful two-minute drill at the end of the first half, Purdy tossed a touchdown pass to Kyle Juszczyk on his first drive and another to McCaffrey.
He completed 25 of 37 passes for 210 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception against a blitzing Miami defense. Juszczyk commented, “Brock has played a lot of football, and you can tell.” It’s the way he plays the position; he’s savvy. He now gets it.
He exudes an air of self-assurance. His leadership in the huddle today was excellent; he could call the plays with authority, get the ball to his receivers quickly, and complete some impressive throws. We still have time to work with Brock, I believe.
Nick Bosa, who recorded three sacks on Sunday, leads the league’s best defense. Purdy joins a squad with a deep collection of playmakers, including McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, and Brandon Aiyuk. Here’s a look at What Happened To Garoppolo?
The road ahead for Purdy will be much more challenging than the first test he took. And just sending him in there in the heat of battle like that, with how much (blitzing) that team did, we had to straighten some stuff up, obviously,” Shanahan said. As one observer said, “I thought he did a hell of a job doing that and protected the ball properly.”

When Will Garoppolo Return?
The quarterback’s ankle appeared severely injured as it was pinned under him during a tackle. Earlier before halftime, the 31-year-old was officially declared out with an injury. With Jimmy G at quarterback, the 49ers have been working their way back to the top of the NFC standings, and their chances of making the playoffs may now depend on how his injury heals.
Although they have a 7-4 record and are in first place in the AFC West, the 49ers face a challenging schedule leading up to the postseason. Next up for Shanahan and company is a matchup against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
After that, they’ll play the Seattle Seahawks, the Washington Commanders, and the Las Vegas Raiders before ending the season against the Arizona Cardinals. For a team with a 31-year-old player still in good shape, that’s a challenging schedule. Here’s a look at What Happened To Garoppolo?
If Purdy is the man who needs to start some or all of those games, the 49ers’ chances of making the playoffs are significantly diminished. Fans of the 49ers can only pray that their player’s ankle injury is not as severe as it initially appeared. If you find this interesting, please forward it to your friends.
