D’Angelo Divorce: Beverly D’Angelo is opening up about some of her past relationships.
The National Lampoon’s Vacation actress, 71, recalls falling in love with Al Pacino, 82, in the 1990s while still married to her husband, Italian duke Lorenzo Salviati, in the new issue of PEOPLE.
She and Salviati eloped shortly after meeting at a party in Los Angeles in the early 1980s and had an agreement, she explains: “We’d each go off and have our fun, but if there were any crises or anything, we’d come back together,” says D’Angelo, who is now starring in the comedic thriller Violent Night.

“The guys I was with always thought it was great that I was married because they knew ‘no responsibility here!’ When I told Al Pacino about my little deal, he said, ‘Well, that’s crazy.’ “She goes on.
D’Angelo called Salviati to explain the situation. “‘I’m in love,’ I declared. ‘Oh, Beverly, who is it this time?’ he says in an Italian accent. ‘Well, it’s an actor,’ I said. ‘An actor?’ he exclaimed. No way, no how, I’m not an actor.’ ‘I love him, and we’re talking about having kids, and he thinks it’s crazy that I’m married, and now I think it’s crazy too,’ I said.”
According to D’Angelo, Salviati continued to protest. “‘Oh, that’s ridiculous,’ he exclaimed. Who thinks this perfect relationship is insane? ‘Who is this performer?’ ‘Well, it’s Al Pacino,’ I said. ‘Al Pacino, he’s fantastic,’ he says. I adore him. ‘We are divorcing!'”
The couple divorced amicably and without a fight. “We just signed these papers,” D’Angelo says. “That’s when my mother-in-law began to like me, I believe. It took her 15 years to realize that I wasn’t in [the marriage] for the title or the privilege.”
When she was 49, D’Angelo and Pacino welcomed twins Anton and Olivia. She and Pacino split up soon after, but she remembers their time together fondly. “The greatest gift Al ever gave me was making me a mother,” D’Angelo says.
Even though they aren’t together anymore, she still considers Salviati her soul mate. “It was a wonderful love story,” she says.
