Curtis “C.J.” Harris, a former “American Idol” contestant, has died. A spokesman for the Walker County Coroner told CBS News that the 31-year-old man from Jasper, Alabama, died Sunday after going into cardiac arrest.
Harris, who was only 23 years old then, took part in the 13th season of the singing competition show in 2014 and came in sixth. AL.com, which at the time wrote about the Alabama contestants, says he tried out for the show in Tuscaloosa.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2014, Harris said that his mother and grandfather influenced his love of music from a very young age. “When I was six, my mother was in jail. She would sing to me over the phone, making me cry, “he said.
“My granddad gave me a guitar when I was a little older. He had one in his shed with three strings on it. He told me I didn’t need to buy all the new strings. Entertainment Tonight says that after “American Idol,” Harris performed with Darius Rucker at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville in 2014. He also went on tour with other contestants from “American Idol.” In 2019, he published his first single, “In Love.”
Jessica Meuse, also in Season 13 of “American Idol,” posted a picture of herself and Harris on Instagram after hearing about his death. “I can’t believe it. Your talent and smile will be missed, and the world is a darker and eerily quieter place without you, “she wrote. “I’ll miss your random phone calls to ask for advice on life and talk about the music world.”
