With Lee Stewart and Bob Horn, Blavat made his television debut on the original Bandstand on WFIL-TV in 1953. He oversaw a nationwide tour for Danny and the Juniors in 1956, and from 1958–1959, he served as Don Rickles’ valet. In 1960, he began his career in radio.
By 1963, Camden, Atlantic City, Trenton, Pottstown, Wilmington, and Allentown had their show on the air as a syndicated program. In his words, “performing music from the heart, not a research chart,” he refused to adhere to a playlist.
Together with Jared Weinstein and Jerry Greene, the founder of Collectables Records, Blavat was a partner in the Lost Nite and Crimson record labels during the 1960s. The three also controlled the now-defunct Philadelphia-based chain of record shops known as Record Museum.
The Discophonic Scene, a dance show for “all my yon teens” similar to American Bandstand (which debuted in Philadelphia a decade earlier), was produced and hosted by Blavat in Philadelphia from 1965 to 1967.
He referred to himself as “the Geator with the Heater” and “the big boss with the hot sauce.” On television, he appeared as a special guest on The Mod Squad, The Monkees, The Tonight Show, and The Joey Bishop Show, among others.
He appears in the motion pictures Cookie, Baby It’s You, and Desperately Seeking Susan. In Margate, New Jersey, Blavat bought a nightclub in 1972 and named it “Memories.”
