Unfortunately, he fell for a con in which his “online lover” feigned to die of leukemia so they could get together. The linebacker’s reputation, career, and public standing all hit even though he was innocent.
The dispute sparked speculation about Te’o’s sexual orientation. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk has publicly stated that he has been approached by NFL teams inquiring about his status as a free agent. They probably thought he made up the girlfriend so no one would suspect his sexual orientation.
When Katie Couric interviewed the linebacker in 2013, she asked him many probing questions. She made it seem like the Notre Dame graduate was extraordinarily ignorant and entangled in a labyrinth of lies. Until she questioned him directly if he was gay, the linebacker had been entirely unruffled. Not even close. Not even close.
That ended the discussion. That’s all there is to say about that. He answered their questions, but many were skeptical because of his words and how he told them. Worryingly, though, he didn’t seem like he could say yes even if he wanted to. Mike Florio believes this answer was an indictment on the NFL. He appeared on the Dan Patrick show in 2013. Here’s what he said:
“That may say a lot about how a gay player would be treated in the National Football League. Although there have been encouraging stories recently about more accepting attitudes in NFL locker rooms, we may still be a long way off from a day when a football player could answer the question, ‘Are you gay?’ with a simple, ‘Yes’ and not fear being shunned by teammates, downgraded by coaches and mocked by fans.”

Born on January 26, 1991, in the Hawaiian town of Laie, Manti Malietau, Louis Te’o is a professional football player. He attended a private secondary school in Hawaii during his formative years and was a standout football player. These honors came in 2007 when he was named both State Defensive Player of the Year and Gatorade State Player of the Year.
Manti had a breakout junior season as a running back, finishing with 90 tackles, five sacks, 400 yards, and ten touchdowns. Throughout the country, universities and recruiters took notice. Before his senior year began, Te’o had already received multiple college scholarship offers. That season, he helped lead his high school to its first-ever state title and contributed 129 tackles, 11 sacks, and four touchdowns.
He returned a blocked punt for a touchdown, which was a highlight of the game. Manti’s accomplishments earned him multiple awards, including Gatorade State Player of the Year for the second time. In 2009, after finishing high school, he enrolled at Notre Dame. The following year, as a freshman, he started every game and finished with 63 tackles.
He got off to a great start, earning himself Freshman All-American recognition. He moved inside to play linebacker his sophomore year. He finished with 133 tackles throughout the season. In addition, he had never been so successful in his entire career. The following year, he improved to 128 tackles and even more recognition.
He finished his college career with 103 tackles, helping Notre Dame to the country’s No. 2 scoring defense ranking. After his time at Notre Dame, Te’o was among the most highly decorated defensive players in college football history.
He was honored with several prestigious accolades, such as the Maxwell Award, Chuck Bednarik Award, Butkus Award, Lombardi Award, and Walter Camp Award. During his time at Notre Dame, he had 437 tackles.
Manti Te’o Career
As the time for Te’o to enter the NFL Draft neared, he became less than impressive in the eyes of many scouts, particularly in terms of his 40-yard sprint time. Soon after, the San Diego Chargers drafted him 38th overall and offered him a $5 million contract over four years. Guaranteed compensation totaled slightly over $3 million, with an additional $2 million as a signing bonus.
Manti’s foot injury in the first preseason game forced him to sit out a significant portion of the schedule. Later that season, he made his debut and concluded the year with 61 tackles and a win over the Houston Texans.
His career was severely derailed in 2014 when he shattered his foot. By the season’s midpoint, he had recovered enough to pile up interceptions and sacks. He averaged roughly 60 tackles per season over the next three years and was eventually elected a team captain for the Chargers that same year. This time, he tore his Achilles tendon, the second injury he had that season.

Manti was traded to the New Orleans Saints after being placed on an injured reserve. He committed to the squad for two years and, in 2017, was the league leader in tackles for loss. When his contract expired, he was unfortunately not re-signed. However, New Orleans re-signed him on a short contract in 2019, even though he did not play for the team for most of the year.
He signed with the Chicago Bears practice squad in 2020. While the team played the New Orleans Saints in 2021, he was added to the active roster. After that game, though, he was demoted back to the practice squad. His NFL career ended when his practice squad contract with the Bears expired in January 2021.
