Exploring the Professional Path of Jeff Cook
Jeff Cook co-founded the band Wildcountry in 1972 with his cousins Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry (the name was changed to Alabama in 1977).
He contributed lead and background vocals, lead guitar, keyboard, and violin to the group’s records. Since the band’s active production and live performances were discontinued in 2004, Cook has played with his bands, Cook & Glenn and the Allstar Goodtime Band.
In addition to launching the radio station WQRX-AM, which he later sold in the neighborhood of Valley Head, Alabama, Cook also established Cook Sound Studios, Inc. in his birthplace of Fort Payne, Alabama.
Cook is also renowned for his culinary prowess; he owned a restaurant and sold his sauce.
Cook appeared with former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee in Alabama and backed him for president in 2008. Cook was admitted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum by Alabama in 2019.
In 1977, Cook and guitarist Randy Owen gave Alabama a new name. The trio gained momentum in the country music industry in the 1970s by adding full-time drummer Mark Herndon.
The group’s RCA career was nothing short of extraordinary, beginning with eight Number One tunes like “Tennessee River,” “Feels So Right,” and “Mountain Music.”
They became the only group to win the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year Award three times in 1982, 1983, and 1984, and their album sales surpassed 75 million.
