Former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said that if Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis enters the race, former President Trump’s margin over his fellow GOP challengers will narrow.
McEnany said in an interview on “America 180 with David Brody” on Friday that she expects the Republican nominating process to be “defined” by the primary debates with the candidates, but how the primaries will proceed is unclear.
She stated that DeSantis has “done a phenomenal job” as governor of Florida and has numerous accomplishments to highlight during the debates.
“Polls show that President Trump has a large lead, but I believe that once Governor DeSantis declares, that lead will narrow,” she stated. “He hasn’t even declared his candidacy as of yet.”
McEnany’s comments come as DeSantis appears likely to announce a decision on whether he will join the race for the Republican nomination in 2024. He said at a news conference on Friday that marked the end of Florida’s legislative session that he will decide “what happens in the future” soon.
The governor of Florida has not formally or publicly acknowledged that he is considering a run for president, but he has been widely reported to be a prospective candidate. In hypothetical Republican primary polling, he has consistently finished second, although Trump has maintained a huge, double-digit advantage.
According to several observers and analysts, DeSantis’ chances of obtaining the nomination have plummeted recently, as he has been frequently assailed by Trump, criticized by some in the party over his program, and lost donors.
But Republican donors and strategists said DeSantis should not be underestimated and has fundraising power and influence that few others in his party have.
