North Carolina Governor Rejects The Ab0rtion Restrictions

North Carolina’s Democratic governor vetoed a bill on Saturday that would ban most ab0rtions in the state after 12 weeks, a move that now faces an override from Republicans in the state legislature.

Gov. Roy Cooper (D-NC) vetoed the law in front of a crowd of supporters in Raleigh, thereby ki!!ing the bill, which passed the state legislature along party lines last week. Cooper urged the public to pressure Republicans in the statehouse to override his veto.

“We’re going to have to kick it into an even higher gear when that veto stamp comes down,” Cooper said. “If just one Republican in the House or the Senate keeps a campaign promise to protect women’s reproductive health, we can stop this ban.”

North Carolina Governor Rejects The Abortion Restrictions

North Carolina state law already prohibits ab0rtions beyond 20 weeks, with the Republican-led 12-week restriction enacted after Roe v. Wade was overturned last year.

Republicans in the state House and Senate, who have the majority, could vote this week to overturn Cooper’s veto. A three-fifths majority in each chamber would be required for an override.

According to a tweet from the official account of CNBC:-

While the bill prohibits most ab0rtions after 12 weeks, it makes some exceptions. In rape or incest, the deadline is pushed back to 20 weeks. For “life-limiting” fetal abnormalities, the restriction is also extended to 24 weeks.

The showdown in North Carolina between Cooper and state Republicans comes as Republican-led states have enacted laws to limit abortion access strictly. There are at least 19 states where there are either full or partial bans on ab0rtion in the U.S., according to a New York Times tracker.

Several states in the United States South have banned ab0rtion, making North Carolina a popular destination for those seeking abortion services in the region. Ab0rtion is illegal in Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
