Due to his involvement in the Capitol attαck on January 6, 2021, Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes was found guilty of seditious conspiracy and sentenced to 18 years in pr!son on Thursday by a federal judge.
The sentence, which came after Rhodes was convicted on several additional offenses, including serious felonies like obstructing an official proceeding, was the most extended pr!son term ever imposed on a participant in the incident.
Judge Amit Mehta handed down the sentence after a lengthy speech in which he chastised Rhodes for referring to himself as a political pr!soner earlier in the hearing.
“You are not a political prisoner, Mr. Rhodes,” Mehta stated, adding that he is “an ongoing threat and a peril to this country.”
He said we “cannot have a group of citizens…willing to take up arms to foment a revolution.” That’s precisely what you did.”
“Every time an election approaches, we all hold our breath.” Will there be another January 6? That is yet to be seen.”
The sentencing comes ahead of countless other Oath Keepers members scheduled to be punished for their roles in the attαck during the coming two weeks.
Several members and another far-right group, the Proud Boys, who faced the accusation in another trial, were convicted guilty of seditious conspiracy.
It’s also vital that Rhodes did not enter the Capitol that day, instead staying on the grounds and commanding his squad via a walkie-talkie app while they entered the building in “stack” formation.
Mehta mostly agreed with the Justice Department, which recommended a 25-year jail term for Rhodes, stating that the former Army soldier urged other veterans to break their oaths when they began their duty to preserve the Constitution.
The maximum punishment for seditious conspiracy is 20 years in pr!son, but the Justice Department also sought a terrorism enhancement for Rhodes and the other Oath Keepers defendants.

“He exploited his vast public influence as the leader of the Oath Keepers and used his talents for manipulation to goad more than twenty other American citizens into using force, intimidation, and violence to seek to impose their preferred result on a U.S. presidential election,” the Justice Department wrote in a sentencing memo earlier this month.
Rhodes’ defenders suggested that he should be sentenced to 16 months in pr!son for his trial.
During the court on Thursday, Rhodes stated that the only thing he is guilty of is “opposing those who are destroying our country” and that others imprisoned for their role in the Jan. 6 incident had been “grossly overcharged.”
“I hope Trump wins in 2024,” stated Rhodes.
