Sarah Huckabee Sanders Sworn: Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the first woman to hold the office of governor in Arkansas and the former press secretary for the White House, took aim at conservatives’ favorite targets, like critical race theory and the federal government, as she was sworn in as the state’s 47th governor on Tuesday.
Sanders is the first woman to hold office in Arkansas. In the two speeches she gave at her inauguration, the Republican didn’t mention either former President Donald Trump or current President Joe Biden. But she talked about a lot of the same things she did when she ran for governor and won.
In November, she won because she talked a lot about national issues and her time in the Trump White House. Sanders, whose father Mike Huckabee was governor for more than a decade, said she was part of a new group of leaders for her home state. Her father was governor for more than a decade.
Sanders said in a 15-minute speech to a joint session of the House and Senate, “A turning point in Arkansas’s history will usher in a new era of good jobs, great schools, safer streets, and stronger families.” “The people of Arkansas have given the power to a new generation because they are very smart. Now is our time. This is the chance we have.“
Shortly after becoming president, Sanders signed seven executive orders. One of them said that public schools couldn’t teach critical race theory, which is a way of looking at American history through the lens of racism. Sanders did not say whether or not any schools in the state teach the theory, which Republicans in other states have tried to ban.

“As long as I’m governor, our schools will teach our kids the skills they need to get ahead in the modern world, not a left-wing political agenda,” she said in a 22-minute speech on the Capitol steps.
She also promised the state’s farmers and small business owners that “the meddling hand of big government creeping down from Washington D.C. will be stopped cold at the Mississippi River.“
“We will get the overregulating, micromanaging, bureaucratic tyrants off your backs, out of your wallets, and out of your lives,” she said. Sanders will be the most well-known former Trump official in office after she is sworn in.
After almost two years as press secretary, she left the White House in 2019 to go back to her home state. Sanders was running for governor, and Trump was a big part of her campaign materials. Since November, she hasn’t said much about the former president, and she hasn’t said if she backs his third run for the White House.
In the same election that Sanders won, Republicans gained even more power in the state House and Senate. Also, every state and federal office in the state is held by a Republican. Monday was the first day of the Legislature’s meeting for this year.
Sanders didn’t say much in her speeches on Tuesday about a plan to reform education that she has said is her top priority. Sanders said that the measure will make pre-kindergarten bigger, help more people learn to read and get students ready for work.
She also said that public money would be used in some way to pay for private schools or home schools. She said, “Let’s give parents a bigger say in their child’s education, including the right to choose the best public, private, or religious school for their child.“

She said again that she agreed with raising teacher pay, but she didn’t say how much. State House and Senate committees have said that teachers should get raises of $4,000. Democrats said that Sanders’ support for teacher raises and expanding pre-K was encouraging, but they disagreed with her calls to stop what she calls “indoctrination” in schools.
In a statement, the party said, “Arkansas Democrats stand with our teachers and know that they are too busy grading papers, buying their own supplies, and making lesson plans to indoctrinate anyone.“
Sanders also signed other executive orders on Tuesday, including a freeze on most government hiring and on making new rules and regulations. Sanders said she wanted to start getting rid of the state’s income tax, which has been cut over the past few years, but she didn’t say how much she wants to cut it by this year.
The state has more than $2 billion in savings when she takes office. She also said again that there needs to be a plan for public safety that includes more prison space. Sanders is taking over for Asa Hutchinson, whose time in office is up after eight years.
Hutchinson might run for president. He is a Republican. He has said that Trump getting the GOP nomination again would be the “worst-case scenario” for his party. Aside from Hutchinson and her father, Democrats Mike Beebe and David Pryor, who was also a senator, were among the other former governors from Arkansas who went to Sanders’ inauguration.
