Taylor Lautner recently upset Taylor Swift fans and his wife, Taylor Dome.
In a tape shared on TikTok yesterday, Feb. 1, Dome asked Lautner what one moment in his life he would go back to if he could and what he would tell himself. Lautner’s response startled us all. The couple creates a podcast together called The Squeeze.
The moment he remarked, “Probably the 2009 VMAs, when I gave the award to Taylor and wasn’t aware that the Kanye thing was not a skit,” caused Dome to recoil, giggle in disbelief as she sank into the seats behind her, and eventually lean back to announce, “I’m deceased,” into the microphone.

He’s referring to one of the most notorious episodes in recent musical history when Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift as she accepted the award for Best Female Film at the MTV Video Music Awards and proclaimed Beyoncé’s video the winner of “one of the most incredible videos ever made. ”
Lautner continued by saying that at the time, shortly after the former couple went public, he believed it to be a staged skit.
He was only a few steps behind Swift, but he could not see their faces or hear what was being spoken on stage.
“I can barely hear it. I can’t see them,” he explained. “I’m just assuming this whole thing was a practiced and rehearsed skit because why else would Kanye West be jumping on the stage interrupting Taylor Swift? It just didn’t make sense.”
He continued, “And if you watch it again, you’ll see I was caught grinning and laughing at him. Even though I can’t hear them, I think this is probably hilarious now.”
However, he realized it wasn’t a prank when he caught a glimpse of the singer’s face as soon as she turned around to exit the stage.
Fans of both parties were moved by his answers when asked about the one moment he’d go back and, presumably, change.
“The ONE moment he chose was to help an EX-GIRLFRIEND. He is such an incredible guy,” one comment read.
“Absolutely nothing could have prepared me for this being his answer,” another admitted.
“I hope he doesn’t carry any guilt over that. ☹️,” someone else wrote.
The song “Back to December” by Taylor Swift, reportedly about the breakdown of their romance, was also frequently cited.
“His song is titled “Return to December” for a purpose. He’s a good one,” one person said, and another added, “And that’s why he’s the only ex ever to receive an apology song.”
“She goes back to December all the time, but he goes back to the 2009 VMAS all the time 🥲🥲,” said another, referencing the lyrics, while another added, “How you held me in your arms that September night the first time you ever saw me cry 🥺”
