The IT industry’s enthusiasm for the idea of a metaverse has been dampened by Tim Cook, the latest prominent figure in the field to do so.
Apple’s CEO told a Dutch tabloid on Friday: “I always think it’s crucial that people understand what something is.” And I doubt the typical individual could explain the concept of the metaverse to you.

Although the word “metaverse” is commonly used to refer to virtual reality (VR) platforms where users can engage in social activities, conduct business, shop for goods, and play games while immersed in a 3D environment, Apple has not yet publicly announced any intentions for the metaverse.
There are already virtual worlds like this out there; however, many of the IT industry’s greatest names are hard at work creating the technology and software required for users to spend considerable time and money in these environments.
The idea of the metaverse is crucial to both Mark Zuckerberg and Meta. Microsoft and Disney aren’t the only ones with metaverse ideas, though.
Although some authorities claim that the public’s lack of knowledge about the future of the metaverse is largely responsible for the widespread excitement surrounding it. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt summed up the widespread misunderstanding of the term in June, saying, “there’s not an agreement on what the metaverse is.”
Snap CEO Evan Spiegel has also described the concept of the metaverse as “ambiguous and hypothetical.” Instead, he has been pushing for his business to adopt an augmented reality (AR) strategy, in which computer-generated data is layered onto physical environments.

Cook is also an enthusiastic supporter of augmented reality (AR), and Bloomberg claims that Apple is working on an AR/VR headset that will be released to the public in 2023. Cook predicted to Bright on Friday that augmented reality’s future uses would be “far, much further” than current ones.
Cook predicted that augmented reality would have far-reaching consequences. Visualize being able to use augmented reality to demonstrate concepts in the classroom all of a sudden. Or in the field of medicine, and so on. Just as I predicted, we’ll wonder how we ever got along without AR.
Apple’s CEO made his metaverse remarks during a recent European tour that took him to the UK and Germany before he ended up at the University of Naples Federico II to address graduates. During the Q&A portion of the event, Cook speculated that augmented reality will come to be seen as similarly indispensable to daily life as the internet is today.
Zooming out into the future and reflecting on your life in the present, you’ll wonder how you managed without augmented reality, Cook added. To paraphrase, “Just like how we marvel today, ‘How could people like me grow up without the internet?’ “
