Dusty Street, formerly known as Dusty Stewart, was born in San Francisco on July 11, 1946. She was steeped in the counterculture of the 1960s having grown up in the Haight-Ashbury district. She became enamored with rock music and made friends with many of its leading personalities, such as Grace Slick, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin.
Dusty Street started her radio career at one of the first pirate stations in the US, KMPX-FM, in 1967. After that, she got a job at KSAN-FM and became one of the first female rock jocks on the West Coast. Her distinct style, biting sense of humor, and unmistakable voice made her popular.
