Blaze Jacobs Dies: Blaze Jacobs, 17, died Monday after having a heart attack in class. His death saddens his school district in southern Ohio. “Blaze was a big part of our school community,” Western Brown High School Principal Heather Cooper wrote in a letter to district families on Monday.
Several community members have shared screenshots of the note on social media. Jacobs was a junior and a “biggest fan” of the school. Cooper wrote, “So we all know this will be hard for everyone in our school family.” Western Brown High School is in the village of Mount Orab, which is in Brown County in the southern part of Ohio.
A week before Jacobs’ death, NFL player Damar Hamlin had a heart attack and collapsed on the field at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati during a national broadcast. When Buffalo Bills safety Hamlin went down late in the first quarter of Monday night’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, sideline medics rushed to his side and did CPR for nearly 10 minutes.
When doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center said Hamlin was healthy again, breathing on his own, and ready to go home to Buffalo, the scene shocked the whole country. It made people realize how important CPR is.

Cooper’s message about Jacobs says that he went into cardiac arrest in class and was taken from the high school to a hospital on Monday morning. Jacobs was dead by evening. A statement on the GoFundMe page set up to pay for Jacobs’ medical and funeral costs says that he got CPR for more than an hour.

Friends of the Jacobs family started the fundraiser to raise $10,000. In just 18 hours, it had already made almost $13,000. The GoFundMe page says, “He loved sports, especially his school’s team. He went to every home game and sat in the student spirit section.“
“Blaze was a wonderful person who touched the hearts of many. If you met him, you would never forget him. Blaze and his happy, cheerful spirit will never be forgotten.” Cooper wrote that the school hired more counselors to help students and staff deal with the loss.
