On Monday, the White House vowed to veto a Republican-led House bill to halt the Biden administration’s student loan forgiveness program.
The White House highlighted its concerns in a Statement of Administration Policy about a House resolution opposing the student debt forgiveness plan, which provides up to $20,000 in assistance to millions of qualifying student loan borrowers.
“This resolution is an unprecedented attempt to undercut our historic economic recovery and would deprive more than 40 million hard-working Americans of much-needed student debt relief,” the administration said in a statement, adding that President Biden would veto the measure if it reached his desk.
The White House also warned that repealing the student loan relief program would disproportionately harm middle-class Americans, noting that about 90% of student debt reduction will likely go to those earning less than $75,000 annually.
“Americans should have a little more breathing room as they recover from the economic strains associated with the COVID-19 pandemic,” claimed the White House.
