On April 20, 2014, Ice Age 2 screenwriter Jim Hecht flew across the country to the home of sportswriter Jeff Pearlman. He suggested that Pearlman’s best-selling book, Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty, be turned into a movie in the style of Friday Night Lights.
The Hollywood Reporter says that Hecht gave Pearlman a bottle of wine without alcohol, some chocolate, and tomato in exchange for the rights to the book. So, if he said “$30,000,” Hecht knows he was taken for a ride.
In exchange for a year of exclusivity, Pearlman agreed to let Hecht put up ads for his book around town. In 2015, the pilot was directed and made by actor Adam McKay.
