Terence Davies’ Legacy
As one of ten children in a Catholic family from Liverpool, England, Davies hailed from a working-class background. His strongest childhood memories are of leaving his sad home to go to boarding school.
He wrote “Children,” his first feature-length screenplay, while he was a student at the Coventry Drama School in 1972. It was his debut short film and was heavily inspired by his experiences growing up as a closeted gay man in a household and school that practiced strict religion.
His biography served as the inspiration for the 1980s short films “Madonna and Child” and “Death and Transfiguration,” which were eventually collected as an anthology.
In 1988, “Distant Voices, Still Lives,” a semi-autobiographical account of living in working-class Liverpool in the 1940s and ’50s, was created as a result of this. Both the movie and its semi-autobiographical sequel, “The Long Day Closes,” were critically acclaimed.
