West Wing Cast: The Actors Who Played The Lead Roles In The Film?

West Wing Cast: On September 22, 1999, Aaron Sorkin’s idealistic political drama had its premiere and went on to receive one of the most Emmy nominations ever. Check out the cast’s activities following the show’s conclusion in 2006

1) The West Wing Premieres In 1999

The West Wing, a classic NBC drama, featured Aaron Sorkin’s love of lengthy monologues, brisk “walk and talks,” and the perfectly timed crescendo of dramatic music. An all-star cast played the idealistic staff of Democratic president Josiah Bartlet in its September 22, 1999, premiere. The programme aired from 2000 to 2006 and won 26 Emmys along the way, including nine in its initial season in 2000, which earned it the record for most awards won by a TV programme.

2) Martin Sheen (Josiah Bartlet)

When Sheen was chosen to play the idealistic, parental president prone to giving speeches in The West Wing, he had already played a character from Sorkin’s The American President (playing the chief of staff to Michael Douglas’ president). He continued to appear in the series throughout its run, but he took a backseat in the last season as the presidential election for his replacement took centre stage.

Sheen has been active in cinema (The Departed, Bobby) and television since the end of the show (Grace and Frankie, Anger Management with his son Charlie Sheen). He even invited them to his birthday celebration in 2018 to show his commitment to his West Wing co-stars.

3) Allison Janney (C.J. Cregg)

Janney earned four Emmys for her performance as the frantic but unflappable press secretary during the course of the show’s run.

Since then, she has seen considerable success in both cinema and television (getting an Emmy for her work on Mom) (in films such as The Help, Juno and I, Tonya, for which she won an Oscar). Oh, and she also shot this collection of sultry pictures for InStyle.

4) Rob Lowe (Sam Seaborn)

Due to disagreements with the show’s writers and producers, Lowe departed his role as the White House deputy communications director in 2003. Lowe was already a well-known actor when the show first debuted because to his stint with the Brat Pack. For the last episodes in 2006, he made a brief return.

Since then, Lowe has been in various TV movies and has been a series regular on Parks and Recreation, The Grinder, and 9-1-1: Lone Star. In addition, his two sons regularly make the news for roasting him on Instagram.

5) Bradley Whitford (Josh Lyman)

For his portrayal of the brash, a little neurotic deputy chief of staff, Whitford was awarded an Emmy. Since The West Wing’s finale, he has consistently acted in films and television shows. Leading roles in The Handmaid’s Tale and Jordan Peele’s movie Get Out are examples of notable roles. He also appeared in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Shameless, and Transparent after the end of The West Wing, for which he received an Emmy. He wed Transparent actress Amy Landecker (who also has a role in The Handmaid’s Tale) in July 2018 after divorcing actress Jane Kaczmarek in 2010.

6) Richard Schiff (Toby Ziegler)

For his portrayal of the sober, moral White House communications director, the actor won an Emmy.

Schiff has continued to work steadily in films and on television since the end of the series, most notably in Ballers and The Good Doctor as well as in Man of Steel and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

7) Janel Moloney (Donna Moss)

Moloney’s persona Donnatella “Donna” Moss served as Josh Lyman’s assistant at the beginning of the series and the new First Lady’s chief of staff (as well as Josh Lyman’s girlfriend) at its conclusion.

In addition to being a member of The Leftovers’ core cast, Moloney has also made appearances on episodes of American Crime, The Undoing, Bull, FBI, and Law & Order: Organized Crime, among other programmes.

8) Dulé Hill (Charlie Young)

The president’s young, devoted aide, Charlie, soon took on the role of a father figure and, potentially, a father-in-law because Charlie had a significant relationship with Zoey Bartlet, the president’s daughter. He received the president’s advice, and by the end of the series, he had been admitted to law school.

Since then, Hill has been in leading roles on Psych, Suits, and the revival of The Wonder Years. In 2018, he wed the actress Jazmyn Simon, and in May 2019, the couple welcomed a baby named Levi.

9) John Spencer (Leo McGarry)

Spencer won an Emmy for his portrayal of the president’s friendly, experienced chief of staff. Sadly, a few episodes into the last season in 2005, Spencer passed away after a heart attack. The writers inserted Spencer’s death into the storyline because the character had coincidentally suffered a heart attack in season 5, but they maintained his name in the opening credits until the show’s conclusion.

10) Stockard Channing (Abbey Bartlet)

By the time Channing was cast as the stern First Lady on The West Wing, she had a long history (beginning with her appearance as Betty Rizzo in Grease) and had received nominations for Oscars, Tony Awards, and Emmys.

She earned two Emmys in 2002 for her performances in The Matthew Shepard Story and The West Wing, and she has since continued to work in theatre, television, and cinema, including post-West Wing Broadway roles in Pal Joey, Other Desert Cities, and It’s Only a Play.

11) NiCole Robinson (Margaret Hooper)

After spending the whole run of the show as Leo McGarry’s eccentric secretary, Robinson joined All My Children. She left performing in 2014 and has largely been out of the public eye ever since.

Robinson and her ex-husband Craig Snyder established the 3 Angels Memorial Fund in 2008 in memory of their son and two of Snyder’s children from a previous marriage who passed away as infants as a result of alveolar capillary dysplasia (ACD).

12) Elisabeth Moss

Following a breakthrough performance as the independent First Daughter (She dated Charlie! She was kidnapped! With celebrated performances in The Handmaid’s Tale and Mad Men, Moss went on to become one of television’s biggest stars (for which she won two Emmys in 2017 for outstanding lead actress in a drama series and as part of the producing team for outstanding drama series).

She has also acted in a number of films, such as The French Dispatch, The Kitchen, and Us. She wed Fred Armisen in 2009, however the couple eventually got divorced. Follow techyember.com for more updates.
